I find a unique joy in teaching and learning along with my students. Each ensemble is an opportunity to collaborate in a new way. In the spring of 2011, I joined the staff of Meridian Academy. I've had the great pleasure of building and running the Music Department and after school band program at this truly remarkable school. This year, I also became the Director of MIT's Vocal Jazz Ensemble. It's thrilling to be part of such a distinguished institution and to have the opportunity to work with some incredible musicians.
I work as a clinician and coach for singing ensembles (a cappella, vocal jazz, show choir), various small ensembles and music theatre productions. These sessions can be anything from one rehearsal focused on a specific task to a broader goal such as group sound. I've worked through full musical productions as well. Please contact me for more information about this type of collaboration.
My private lessons studio includes voice, guitar, ukulele and songwriting. I teach all levels in and around Boston. Each partnership has its own goals and journey and is tailored accordingly.
My not-so-secret passion is arranging. I love reimagining a song and reshaping the box to fit new ideas. I am comfortable arranging for any and all ensembles. My arrangements have been performed most notably by Audra McDonald, MIT Jazz Ensembles, From The Top, Berklee School of Music Vocal Jazz Ensemble and New England Conservatory Jazz Ensembles.
I am most active as a composer of original theatre music. My partnership with Misha Chowdhury, called Grill and Chowder, has produced the following shows:
How the White Girl Got Her Spots - premiered at ARS NOVA as part of ANT FEST (2017)
Artemis in the Parking Lot - performed at Playwrights Horizons as part of NYMF (2016)
The Optics of Dying Light - premiered at HERE Arts Center NYC (2015)
Before and After – premiered at Columbia University NYC (2014)
Artemis in the Parking Lot – original musical for Meridian Academy (2013)
My personal soundtrack manifests in a folk/rock/grass/jazz kind of way. While I'm always working on different projects, you can hear the majority of my original songs with the Laura Grill Band.
